Theme Essay Boot Camp JC

Cathedral By Raymond Carver

In the “Cathedral” by Raymond Carver the theme presented in the short story is even if people are different and have different qualities does not make them any less human. The author Raymond Carver constructs this theme by showing the his audience the ignorance of the man, the act of communion, and finally an epiphany towards Robert the blind man.
The theme begins to construct itself at the beginning of the short story when the main character whose name is unknown shows the audience his ignorance towards Robert and his case. Robert being blind set him apart from the rest of the world in the man’s eyes therefore almost classifying him in a category of his own. The man in the story did not see Robert as just another individual of this world with a slight special sensitivity towards the world and how he viewed it, the man simply dismissed the case and did not want to hear of it any further because he did not understand it. When many do not understand what they are getting into they become ignorant towards the following case like in Robert’s case. An example that demonstrated the man’s utter unawareness of the blind he says, “ I remember having read somewhere that the blind didn’t smoke because, a speculation had it, they couldn’t see the smoke they exhaled.” This quote showed how ignorant and little the man knew about blind people. That just because they had this problem that caused them to be blind did not impair them from regular activities such as smoking. When the man said this he continued saying that he could not believe that Robert could smoke, and yes Robert did smoke like any other fellow out there. His blindness did not stop him from carrying on things such as smoking. The ignorance and the man had and where ever he had read this led him to become completely arrogant towards the case upon him.
During the short story Robert was staying for a visit and the man and his wife’s home. As soon as they got adjusted they sat at a table for dinner. I believe that the table is where the communion and forth of togetherness of all of them flourished. “We dug in. We ate everything there was to eat on the table. We grazed that there was no tomorrow. We didn’t talk. We ate. We scarfed. We grazed that table. We were into serious eating.” When the man whom spoke as the narrator in the story depicted the way they had eaten at the table is showed how they all came as one. There was no difference there, they ate the same way no difference therefore showing the man that Robert was no different in his actions or qualities than any of them. The communion that is talked about in “How to read Literature like a Professor”, by Thomas C. Foster the act of communion is used to show how people come together through evil and good, that through the act of eating, sitting at a table together brings people together. The food they ate and the way the ate with one another showed the man that they were all equal and then man was no different than him and his wife even if he was blind.
The epiphany and the sole purpose that contributes to the theme of the story is at the end when the man and Robert become one. The man all this time has judged and misunderstood Robert and didn’t want to even meet him at first. However, as the story progressed slowly the man came to realize how Robert was no different than any other man out there. The epiphany that occurred at the ending can be demonstrated by, “My eyes were still closed. I thought I’d keep them that way for a little longer. I thought it was something I ought to do.” When the man does this action with keeping his eyes closed he becomes one with Robert, finally stepping a little bit into Robert’s shoes and seeing what its like being different and outside of his shell. Therefore by taking this step and transforming himself into being someone else other than himself he realized that there is no difference between people who are a bit different than regular people, it’s just giving them a chance and not being ignorant towards them. Raymond used this epiphany to finally push through the overall theme of the story which was even if people are different and have different qualities does not make them any less human.

Irony Essay Boot Camp Essay JC

The Gospel According To Mark
By Jorge Luis Borges

In “The Gospel According To Mark”, by Jorge Luis Borges the author tries to convey irony through the subtext. The way the he uses irony to write his short story is by demonstrating how the character shows sarcasm for the things he most wants, uses religion to set a tone of complete irony, and also he uses elevated language in order to show his readers how the irony can be seen in the text.
In the short story the man says, “His wide intelligence was undirected; at the age of thirty-three, he still had not qualified for graduation in the subject to which he was most drawn.” In this quote the narrator explains house something is not done and not by will he shows the audience how the tone of sarcasm is used. By saying that he has not yet completed something he loves at the age of thirty-three not because of lack of effort but maybe through incapacity. It shows ironic because when someone is drawn towards something especially a topic of study usually they end up doing excellent in such things, however not for this character he seems to have failed to complete something he wants dearly. Even though the man has a great range of intelligence it is ironic that he cannot seem achieve this task, it’s a ironic that he’s so qualified however is a total failure.
Another aspect that the narrator uses to show irony in the text is through religion and his doubtfulness in it. He uses irony to show how he does not believe that everyone is saved when they should be damned. “What hell? A place under the ground where souls burn and burn. And the roman soldiers who hammered in the nails, where they saved too?” Through this quote the narrator tries to demonstrate irony through religion because he puts a tone of sarcasm on how someone how has created such evils against Jesus or onto anyone can be saved. When they speak of nails they are using this symbolism to date it back towards the time of Jesus in the A.D. The irony that is used is how can someone be forgiven when they have caused so much evil in the world? He does not believe in hell, the narrator so he wants to convey his irony on how even the evilest of all evil can be saved.
The author uses elevated language in order to really show his audience that he is using irony throughout his short essay. The author uses words such as inevitable or paternity in order to show the audience how his language in the story helps the author convey irony through the text. The words inevitable is used to talk about a dinner gap that had been occurring in the story and the word paternity was being used to talk about the unknowing of whom a son or daughter might be from. This showed how irony was used in the text.

Lilies in a Pod

I'm cold. My room is like an ice box. I fell down the stairs like an hour ago, and i didn't even need ice all i did was take my shirt off. That's how cold my room is. My hands are frozen like it's hard to type. I feel my fingers getting more and more numb by the minute, and it's not even that cold out today. I mean its quiet chilly but not frosty.

Weird Essay Boot Camp JC

Tales of ghosts, demons and of the supernatural would hardly be things associated with the word “weird”. Generally the accepted definition for the word “weird” is a situation of which doesn’t conform to regular society. However, it’s history tells us otherwise. The word “weird has a full and rich history, how “weird” has evolved from past to future, and how the word is essentially used today and has been used in the past. The word “weird“ used in history is quiet different from the meaning that it leads us to believe today. “Weird” begins its roots from the northern texts in Scotland and was used in Scottish or old English literature, such as Shakespeare. The essential meaning of the word weird comes from fate and destiny. This definition ties in with the one today however the way it was used in the 1300’s is highly different than modern day today.

Their longing for equality and their approach to it was simultaneously unrealistic and social suicide.

Point of View Essay Boot Camp JC

In A Rose For Emily written by William Faulkner, Miss Emily is profound and a highly troubled soul. In the short story William Faulkner wants to show his readers the sole purpose of which Miss Emily posses, which are her solitude driving her to complete insanity in order to develop the purpose.
Miss Emily Grierson has always been alone in her measly old town. At first she was attached to her father, however he passed on and she still remained alone. Once finding a beloved to keep by her side she did not grip onto him hard enough because he too left poor Miss Emily. Her solitude is driven by her loss of loved ones around her. Her solitude creates meaning to the short story because it shows the readers how too much solitude in a persons life can drive a person to go completely insane at one point. Miss Emily shows to posses insane qualities when she is found buying arsenic, not leaving her home at all for anything, or how her personal hygiene had crumbled. Along with her lack of hygiene her home has a foul smelling and unpleasant place. However, her life is being told by the view of those who live around her and not directly by her. The objective view is placed upon Miss Emily. Faulkner uses this narration to create a lack of understanding between how much they didn’t know about Miss Emily. The town believed her to be lonesome however not crazy enough to sleep with a dead corpse. For example in the passage the husband to which Miss Emily had intended to marry had died but her insanity did not accept this and so she lay with him. Only to later would the town find out about this upon Miss Emily’s death.
Faulkner’s creates a tone to which makes the readers feel either guilty and sad for Miss Emily and the completely twisting his thoughts by giving us the sense of total fear. He uses the story to report what he wants to get across by using gossip amongst the towns folk. By using all of these things together he shows his readers the absolute purpose of the story which is Miss Emily’s solitude drove her to complete insanity. When Faulkner uses the gossip as an evidence to demonstrate his purpose he uses phrases like “Then some of the ladies began to say that it was a disgrace to the town and a bad example to the young people”. This form of gossip showed how the people in the town felt that Miss Emily’s case was effecting those around her. That her insanity was bothering those around her. Especially that when a rumor gets out it’s never the same from when it first started. People always change their stories and many stories were told about Miss Emily. She was a poor and lonely women that enjoyed her solitude but it led her to her ultimate downfall amongst society. Miss Emily was the most talked about lady her in town because everyone believed her to be insane. The evidence that people thought she was a bad example for the town showed the readers that the author intended to show that Miss Emily was insane and someone who scared the town, which was Faulkner’s purpose from the start.
William Faulkner wanted to show his readers that through objective point of view or the narration of the minor characters such as the town people exemplified the purpose to which he wanted his readers to see, which was how insane a person can be after solitude. For instance in the case of poor Miss Emily. In all ways Miss Emily proved Faulkner’s purpose of solitude to insanity.

Setting Essay Boot Camp JC

Setting Essay
“To Build A Fire”, by Jack London weather took form of a detrimental character who played the main role in the setting. The setting in itself was a cold, dark, and lifeless place in which took form of a character in itself in the story.
The setting is being held in the deepest most cold areas of Canada. The frosty weather that is being held throughout the novel which plays a character because of how it combats with man. Therefore bringing man vs. nature. Man wants to fight the cold and believe that it can conquer it however the weather in itself will not allow him to. The place to which he has adventured to has won over his arrogant mind and put him at a life threatening situation. An example that states that the weather has taken character form in the setting is spoken in the text. “As he turned to go on, he spat speculatively. There was a sharp, explosive crackle that startled him. He spat again. And again, in the air, before it could fall to the snow, the spittle crackled. He knew that at fifty below spittle crackled on the snow, but this spittle had cracked in the air.” Here it talks about the coldness of the weather showing its true force over man. The spittle did not even reach the ground because the weather was below average temperature for a human to be out in, and the man continued his trail and it ultimately led him to his fate.
The weather in the story took life form in the setting because it is where everything had been taken place and where this ultimate battle between man and nature had been held. The man believed that he could win over this traitorous weather and continue his trip but because the weather took this form to which characterized it in order to show how cruel it really was. In the story the setting is all surrounded by cold and wood like even forest like areas. The story is automatically showing the readers that woods always led’s to trouble. The man being alone and with only a dog as companion showed the readers that he was fighting nature through the stubborn man personality, the one where man thinks he can conquer anything and anyone. The weather is the man’s antagonist in the story, and to show the readers this the narrator depicts the weather in a lifeless way. The weather taking away life and giving life. Taking away life because its coldness will kill and the giving of life because snow itself can be considered life giving and beautiful. Ultimately the weather and setting were intertwined into one another. The setting was in a cold and frozen time and it made the weather into this person whom the man was fighting off the whole time. However, man cannot fight off something that is more powerful than him put together and the cold at the beginning foreshadowed his downfall. The man and nature have fought in their ultimate battle and nature has won and left the man to die, like it had intended.

Five-Forty-Eight
Blake a typical womanizer or just a guy trying to make it out in the world? In the short story “The Five-Forty-Eight”, by John Cheever Blake’s character demonstrates to have uncaring and insensitive qualities towards women. His personality is what determines how he treats others and communicates with those around him.
John Cheever makes the character Blake exemplify the typical norm of a man using a women. A man at the work force and women at the work face having inter office relationship can only end badly. In Blake’s case it went as bad as it could get. Miss Dent a lunatic women working in the same business mixed pleasure with business. Blake used her for sexual relations and soon after finding out what a mishap he had caused. By using Miss Dent he showed no compassion for her and no sympathy for her case because soon after he had her dismissed from work. Blake let Miss Dent go like yesterdays trash another useless piece of material in his world. His character shows to be somewhat of a uncaring, not at all thoughtful of feelings, and careless. Blake demonstrates all these characteristics when he decides to fire Miss Dent. He used her, fired her, and then didn’t think much about it until it physically affected his well being.
Blake mistreated a person coming out of a hospital for problems that were not clearly explained. However, he knew that she had been hospitalized but failed to figure out why as well. He therefore used a mental patient and didn’t think of the outcome. Blake’s personality is very careless because he did not use his mentality to understand why she was the way she was, this being so it backfired onto him. When Miss Dent is fired she gets very ill and does not leave her home for three or more months. She plans for many things to happen to Blake and tells him this when she threatens to take his life. Blake for the first time cared that something could possibly happen to him. It seemed as even for a moment that he might get an epiphany and change his morals. However, when his life is on the line and Miss Dent in a cold and psychotic way makes him dig his face into solid dirt he is scared but it did not change his view. He got out alive and walked home. When he walked home his carelessness and same womanizing traits did not evolve and change they stayed the same and for him life went on living.
John Cheever uses Blake to show his readers how a flat character works. A flat character like Blake did not change even after a life changing experience. He has significant traits, however, they all evolve around the same narcissistic, heartless, and centered personality. He cares about one thing and that is about his own being. When his being is at stake he feels the slight change and even gave the readers the feel of a sympathetic view towards him, however soon after this view is distorted. For instance Blake says “Most of the many women he had known had been picked for their lack of self-esteem. “ He talks about women as if he went into a store and hand picked the ones that would be easy. Blake is an omniscient narrator and he showed his readers just how much of a heartless man he was being. Right then he characterized everything that fit his category which was an uncaring womanizer that is selfish towards others feelings. In which proved how Blake’s character exemplifies one of a uncommunicative heartless womanizer.
